The US Mint first produced this particular coin in 1795, and the Mint produced a total mintage of 5,583 coins. The coin has incredible historical significance. Even more astonishing is that experts believe there to be less than ten percent of the original mintage left today.
1907 Proof Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle High Relief Lettered Edge Coin
President Theodore Roosevelt is said to have commissioned Augustine Saint-Gaudens in hopes that he would redesign the coinage of the US in 1907. This new design was heavily inspired by Roman and Greek design. He also designed the date of the 1907 coin in Roman numerals, which are shown as MCMVII.
