Alcatraz was located on an island, so it had deep and cold water surrounding it. If prisoners climbed the walls, they would have to swim to the shore, and it was dangerous. The prison closed back in 1963, but it was considered the harshest of environments!

The men in our story weren’t the only ones who tried to escape, but the others were not successful. Overall, 23 prisoners tried, though they were captured and returned to their cells. Then, they got more consequences because of it.
