While there are plenty of iconic historical images that we’re all familiar with, whether its Alfred Eisenstadt’s sailor kissing a woman in Times Square or Joe Rosenthal’s photo of American soldiers raising a flag in Iwo Jima during WWII, there’s a reason why these images stand the test of time. However, there are still so many photos that can give us a taste of historical events that may not be so famous but still fascinating to see. These images give us a glimpse into a world that is not so familiar to most anymore.
The Titanic’s Staircase
Everyone has heard of the tragedy of the Titanic ship sinking. Though there aren’t any photographs of what its grand staircase once looked like, we can see a very similar one from the RMS Olympic, a nearly identical ship from the same time. The image offers a stark contrast to the Titanic’s shipwreck i the ocean now.
She Survived Both RMS Olympic and Titanic
Imagine surviving one historic tragic ship sinking, only to then proceed to experience the same thing all over again. Violet Jessop was an ocean liner stewardess and nurse that worked on the RMS Titanic and the RMS Olympic. She she was onboard the Olympic when it collided with the HMS Hawke in 1911, and she also survived the Titanic’s sinking in 1912 and helped people get to safety on a lifeboat.
