Beloved (1998)

This 1998 film was based on the classic Toni Morrison novel of the same name, which won the Pulitzer Prize. The film featured Thandie Newton, Oprah Winfrey, and Danny Glover. The film was released the same weekend as Chucky, and Winfrey said: “[T]hey said, ‘It’s over. You got beat by Chucky.’ And I said, ‘Who’s Chucky? What do you mean it’s over? It’s just Saturday morning!’”

Cowboys & Aliens (2011)

Cowboys & Aliens took 14 years to produce and featured stars like Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford. However, none of that could make this movie do well, and to top it off, it was released the same weekend as The Smurfs. The movie ended up losing somewhere between $63 and $75 million.
