In Hubert’s report, he said he hadn’t registered that he couldn’t hear or see Austin. In fact, he was searching for his glasses in the water. When he finally realized that his 18-year-old stepson wasn’t in sight, he didn’t automatically panic.

They had wandered apart. Hubert moved back to where he’d initially been, but he couldn’t see well without his glasses. Calling to Austin didn’t help because the boy didn’t reply. He reported that to the park rangers but waited a few days before doing so!
